Warming up the popcorn…

ABC's The Rookie (TV-14) premiered October 16, 2018, created by Alexi Hawley and starring Nathan Fillion as John Nolan—a newly divorced fortysomething who becomes the oldest rookie in the LAPD after helping stop a bank robbery. Early seasons play like an optimistic fish-out-of-water workplace drama with heart, mentorship, and case-of-the-day energy closer to comfort TV than grim prestige cop shows. As the series runs into later seasons (now a long-running ensemble with Nolan as a training officer, spin-off territory, and higher-stakes arcs), the tone hardens: serial-killer storylines, more frequent shootouts, heavier relationship drama, and occasional social-issue / identity storylines. Families will find genuine themes of second chances, service, courage, and justice—especially around Nolan—but should treat this as a teen-and-up procedural that grows more intense and culturally modern after Season 1, not a static "clean" sitcom-adjacent show.
